COSTA TROPICAL

Along the dramatic stretch of coastline of the province of Granada sits the Costa Tropical. This rugged and stunning region reaches inland from the coast and offers immense opportunities to explore the beautiful villages and cities rich with history and tradition, customs and food plus there is the added bonus of the wonderful Sierra Nevada mountain range with it's own ski resort, hiking and national park.

The Granada province is strategically located between the airports of three important Spanish cities: Malaga, Granada and Almeria and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful regions of Spain - certainly the Spanish people believe this to be true as Costa Tropical is where many have their second home.

To give you just a bit of geographical information on this little gem of a Costa, the Costa Tropical is Europe's only subtropic region, sheltered from the worst effects of European winters by the Sierra Nevada mountains. Africa to the south helps to buffer the harsh effects of the Atlantic and Mediterranean weather and the result is an exceptionally pleasant and healthy climate with little rain and over 320 days of sunshine a year. In the winter, midday temperatures average a remarkable 18 degrees centigrade. During the summer months, this average rises to 25 degrees, with midday temperatures often reaching 30 or more, but there without the stifling humidity common to the tropics. In fact, the World Health Organisation recently described this region as the healthiest place on earth to live.

Outside of the tropics, this is the only region where certain fruits can be grown, for example: custard apples. There are also plenty of orange, olive, lemon and almond groves, as well as lush tomato and avocado plantations that dot the countryside and surrounding hillside terraces.

The Costa Tropical is a paradise for those who enjoy outdoor sports such as hang gliding, scuba diving, sailing, rock climbing, abseiling, scrambling, horse riding, water skiing, wind surfing, flying, parachuting as well as more leisurely pursuits like golf (there are several superb courses in the area), painting, sea fishing, bird watching or simply rambling through seemingly endless expanses of open untouched countryside.

The beaches are a mix of soft volcanic sand and smooth pebbles that reach into the crystal clear blue waters of the Med and all along the coastline there are inviting coves and harbours - some are only reachable via boat.
Incredibly, it is little more than an hour's drive from this subtropical haven to the snow-clad slopes of the Sierra Nevada, where some of Europe's best skiing can be enjoyed. It is also less than an hour's drive to the beautiful, historic city of Granada, and driving in Spain's open, light-traffic motorways is a joy for motorists accustomed to the congested roads of Britain.

Food in the region is as varied as the terrain. From the high mountain ranges around Granada comes the best known specialty of the region, Jamon de Trevelez, a ham that is cured in the snow. There are special mountain dishes to be sampled in the local tapas restaurants, and down by the seaside, there is a glutton of fish and seafood to tempt the palate.

Costa Tropical is a rustic, dramatic and beautiful area and is very much for those seeking the real Spain.
